Cryostorage Inventory

Inventory of cryopreserved specimens is a time consuming procedure.  Many busy programs have failed to initiate routine annual or semi-annual inventories of their specimens because of time constraints for their staff.

Cryoinventories should be done “forwards” and “backwards.”  That is, the specimens in the tank should be checked against a mater list to make sure that everything in the dewar is accounted for on the list (forward), and everything on the master list should be found in the dewars (backwards).  The most difficult aspect of cryoinventories however is documenting that the master list is accurate.  This should entail chart review and verification.  This final step is often missing in annual inventories.

IVF Lab Consultants can assist in annual inventories.  Utilizing our services allows the IVF program to continue to perform cycles without taking staff away from their routine duties to conduct the inventory.

Services:

  • Create a master list if one is not currently available.
  • Remove all samples from the dewars and visually inspect canes/goblets to determine if the number of straws/vials matches the master list.
  • Verify that everything on the master list is present in the dewars.
  • Review patient charts to verify that the count in the dewars matches the information provided to the clinic and patient.
  • Review documentation/labeling to verify that it complies with laboratory policies for the FDA.
  • Provide a written report of any discrepancies in the inventory.
  • Revise labeling and documentation to match FDA compliance.

Cost:
The cost of service will depend on which services are requested, the number of samples in storage, and the status of the documentation.
